The are currently 16 universities operating in the TRNC, while a further 16 universities are expected to be established, according to a report by the higher education planning evaluation, accreditation and coordination council (YODAK).
For the first time, YODAK has suspended the opening of two universities in the country however, because the higher education council’s authority is restricted, it cannot halt this unprecedented growth report Turkish Cypriot daily, Kibris.
The report underlines that the 16 active universities provide a total of 1,255 education programmes. Education staff numbers have reached 4, 529 and there are 100, 911 students.
Referring to the remarkable increase of the universities in the TRNC, YODAK’s report stresses the need for amendment to the law regarding the universities, and for the determination of an action plan in the higher education sector.
