Nigerian pop heavyweights Wizkid and Davido have been on a record smashing spree and their victory at the just concluded MOBO Awards has once again triggered the infamous ‘Wizkid vs Davido Debate’.
Wizkid emerged winner in the Best International Act category beating; Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Cardi B, DJ Khaled, Solange and Travis Scott while Davido emerged winner in the Best African Act category beating; Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Mr Eazi, Maleek Berry, Tekno and Wande Coal.
Wizkid is a two time MOBO Best African Act winner, but his Best International Act victory is an history one as he is the first African artiste to emerge winner in that category.
Everyone who is a Wizkid follower knows that the Starboy doesn’t fail to profess his dream of taking African music to the doorsteps of the global audience and his recent MOBO Award victory is a proof that the man is living his dream. Think about how massive this is; He won against Cardi B who has the biggest Hip-hop record (Bodak Yellow) of 2017, Jay-Z and Kendrick who released highly successful albums (4:44 and DAMN) and sparked vital conversations in 2017 and DJ Khaled the serial hit curator.
Being nominated in the Best International Act category is in itself a great feat as it proves that his music has indeed transcended the borders of Africa and he is a major force in the global music market.
Davido on the other hand made it clear at the start of 2017 that he has very little interest in the international market. ‘I’m going back to basics’, he said and his MOBO Award win in the Best African Act category is a proof that man is also living his dream.
Davido has secured his position as the biggest Nigerian pop singer in Africa while Wizkid has secured his position as the biggest African pop singer in the world.
These two are properly hoisting the African flag and we are so proud of them.
