They came. they saw. they made huge hits, toured the world, won awards and for some reason they can't keep up with the ever changing industry. Yes today ReplayTunes will take you through a list of 5 Nigerian artists that were on top of the world a few years back but today are struggling with their careers.
1. Ice Prince
He went from being M.I Abaga's back up singer/hypeman to becoming the biggest African artist in 2010 after his song 'Oleku' smashed through the Afropop charts. His debut album 'Everybody Love Ice Prince' sold over 3 million copies in Nigeria Alone. His sophomore album 'Fire Of Zamani was also a huge success with hits like 'Aboki' and 'VIP' coming from the project. He won the much coverted BET Awards for Best International Act in 2014 to crown his efforts. In recent times, Ice Prince has been consistently described an becoming an upcoming artist again. His released his third album 'Jos To The World' last year and it was a huge flop. His problem was that he kept rapping and singing with thesame style and repeating his lyrics and melodies and no one in his team ever told him the ruth till it became to late.
2. May D.
This is another artist that went from a back up singer to superstar status. He was a back up singer and ghost writer for PSquare. He first stumbled upon fame when he featured on some of their singles inclduing the smash hit 'Chop My Money' which featured Akon. Shortly afterwards he left Square Records and started his own independent imprint Confirm Record. Not to long after that, he had the whole country dancing to tunes like 'Gat me High', 'Your Eyes' and 'Ibadi' but in recent times, he has been struggling. He is very talented so he might make a come back. Who knows.
3. Sean Tizzle.
Sean Tizzle blew up in 2013 out of no where. He was a member of Sound Sultan's crew Naija Ninjas but he left the group and began working with producer, DTunes who was responsible for producing Inayanya's first album. Not too long from then, Sean Tizzle released two singles at once titled 'Sho Lee' and 'Boogie Down'. But it was 'Sho Lee' that caught the attention of DJ's and fans nationwide and it rose to the very top of every radio chart and other charts. The song was so big that it helped usher in his next song 'Mama' and subsequent releases like 'Loke Loke' and 'Take It'. Mehn, Sean Tizzle had a really good run but we don't even know whats up with him these days.
4. Inyanya.
Oh my days. This is one story we didn't think will take this twist so soon. Inayanya was first introduced to the world after he won the 3rd edition of the talent hunt show MTN Project Fame in 20008. Though he didn't immediately blow up afterwards, he kept grinding his way up and in 2012, luck smiled on him and his single 'Kukere' blew up and rose to the top of the Nigerian music charts and soon afterwards, Africa was lit up with the song. He went on to release a slew of hits and two albums. Some of his hits includes 'Flavour', 'Ur Waist', 'Sexy Mama' featuring WizKid and 'Mr. Oreo'. He won every major award you could think of exclsing the BET Awards and Mobo Awards. He also had a major run just like Ice Prince. He left his record label Tripple MG Records and signed to Mavins last year and released his last hit song 'Up 2 Something' and that was the last we heard from him. We were surprised to learn he released and EP also but its obvious by now that the project flopped and his future in music is now looking so bleek.
5. Cynthia Morgan.
Original StarGirl as sherself didnt have an easy trip to the top. She first made her debut hit in 2009 when she featured on Jhybo's hit song 'Ejolefun (Run Their Mouth)' and disappeared afterwards. Then she made a grand return in 2014 when suddenly a slew of her songs like 'I'm Taken', 'Symathiniya' and 'Don't Break My Heart' started gaining a buzz and ultimately blew up in Nigeria and numerous other African Countries. She got signed to Square Records and hired Jude Okoye as her manager. She quickly became one of the most promising artists coming out of Africa and started touring the continent. All of a sudden she stopped releasing any songs or doing features though her instagram page still suggests that she still sings but not much is heard from her anymore. She is one talent we will miss i she never makes a come back and we hope she does.
